The Scary Act of Change

When your goals are achieved, when your affirmations have come true, when things are different, you will be a different person. Guaranteed. There is no skating by with old patterns, beliefs and habits, hoping that no one will notice and grant you a miracle. This is where it gets scary. As we begin to take our dreams seriously and continually say affirmations, we will be called to change, to do things that may be intimidating, to step out of our comfort zone, to seize opportunities. At this point a lot of people turn back. They get the nudge for action, they feel motivated, but become scared to claim the person they are becoming.

Yes, it is heck-of-comfortable to turn back and keep your dreams on the back-shelf; however, the ride to greatness can be exhilarating.

Here are three steps for taking responsibility for becoming the person you were meant to be:

  1. Become Aware: Notice your thoughts, routines, habits and beliefs. Observe how you act as you move through life. How do you react to stress? Challenges? How do you celebrate your wins? Take note of the things that you say and do most frequently. This is your starting point.

  2. Determine Your End-Point: What is your goal? When you visualize yourself having achieved your dream, what do you see? What actions do you take? Are you confident? Are you assertive? Are you kind? In your mental playground, really get to know the you that you are becoming.

  3. Work on Your Incongruencies: Determine where the current awareness of your thoughts and habits does not match-up with the visualized image of yourself. These are the areas that will be changing. Begin with believable affirmations that move you toward your goals.

For instance, if you visualized that you are outgoing, and you currently have low energy, start with the statement: “I have the capacity to expand my energy.” Something that is believable now, but that also stretches you toward your goal.

If it is a habit you want to change: (for example) Your visualized self exercises daily and you have not done a sit-up in years, take a small step to implement a new exercise routine (2 days per week for 20 minutes as a starting point.)

When you hit the inevitable resistance and you hear a small voice telling you to turn back, acknowledge the fear and plow ahead. As you step toward your visualized self, you will become amazed at the capacity, the resilience and the motivation you had all along.

Journal Exercise:

List one thought or habit you currently have that you would like to change and the first action step you will take this week.
