On Confidence...

"Confidence doesn't come out of nowhere. It's a result of something... hours and days and weeks and years of constant work and dedication." -Roger Staubach

“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” -Eleanor Roosevelt

“The only thing that stands between you and what you want is you and what you don't want to do.” -Larry Winget

Waiting for Confidence

Last year I wanted to write a book. In preparation, I listened to an online teleseminar about book writing. The presenter said something that really stuck with me; she said, “You don’t get confidence before writing the book. You get the confidence after writing the book.”

Are you waiting to feel confident before you start working toward your dream? Let me tell you. It’s not going to happen. Confidence only comes from doing the work. Throwing yourself into the middle of it and learning how to swim is what gives confidence. The small wins will give you boosts of confidence to tackle bigger challenges which give bigger boosts of confidence.

How do I know this is true? I finally wrote that book. I had to push through nerves and hush my inner critic several times with each page I typed. I kept reminding myself that the fact that I didn’t feel particularly confident as I typed was not a sign that I shouldn’t be writing. I continued to hope that what I heard a year earlier is true, that after the last page was written I would indeed feel confident.

On a sunny June morning, I parked myself at Starbucks with a soy latte to do a final read of my book before I turned it in. Confidence arrived. As I saw each chapter come together, I learned that it was true. Confidence shows up after the book is done, not before.

Stop waiting to feel confident before you pursue your goals. Go after them as nervous and as scared as can be, confidence will be there in the end.

There will be lots more details to come about the book which will be released in 2013…stay tuned!!
