Review:

If you can get over the fact that the book has “SELF-HELP” printed in bold on the cover, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind is a book worth spending some time on. Murphy’s philosophies run parallel with Science of Mind if you are familiar with those beliefs. This book is the best I have read on the practical use of Science of Mind. Joseph Murphy does a stupendous job of meticulously leading the reader through the techniques that can dramatically alter their life. Murphy surmises that the subconscious mind is the part of man that is connected to the “infinite intelligence.” It is this power that gifts us with “infinite wisdom,” “infinite power,” and “an infinite supply of all that is necessary.” By using scientific prayer (affirmations), Murphy teaches the reader that they can tap into the subconscious to solve problems, create wealth, heal relationships and remain young in spirit.

The Power of Your Subconscious Mind is unique because it is chock-full of personal stories from history, news and people Murphy has personally counseled. When telling each story he does more than just give the problem, then say that the person practiced scientific prayer and achieved desired results. He gives in great detail the exact steps and words they used during their prayer. He states how often they prayed and how long it took before their result manifested. That creates confidence in his methods and belief that changing your subconscious can change your life.

Murphy is also a big advocate of using sleep to solve problems and shift your subconscious. He discusses many success stories where people created an affirmation and then repeated it over and over again almost as a lullaby as they went to sleep. The drowsy state prior to sleep makes the subconscious mind more susceptible to suggestion. For busy people who don’t think they have time to focus on affirmations, repeating affirmations as you fall asleep can be an easy way to begin implanting your desires in your mind.

The book does have a section focused on why affirmations might fail, but the book is a bit lacking in techniques to overcome these obstacles.

It does not recognize that some blocks may take more background work than only an affirmation to overcome. Our results are built on years of beliefs. Rather than focus only on a single issue at a time, we sometimes need to look at the big picture to see what is preventing us from believing in our good.
